TORONTO — Leading by example on the ice and in the locker room, the Toronto Six have re-
signed left-winger Shiann Darkangelo, who returns for her third season at the helm of the
franchise.
“It was exciting getting to actually play at our rink this season for the first time and getting fans
in the building,” the captain said. “It kind of felt like the first season even though it was the
second season, so I think we have a great thing going with the core group of players, and we
did have a good deal of success this season, so I was excited and want to continue to build off
of that and see where we can go, so I decided to re-sign.”
Averaging a point-per-game through the regular season, Darkangelo finished Season 7 with
career-high numbers, registering 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists. Trailing only Mikyla
Grant-Mentis for the team lead in points, she was named for a third time as a PHF All-Star
alongside the likes of six other Toronto Six invitees.
She was also among the league's best in face-offs, while playing on the team’s top line with
the likes of Grant-Mentis and forward Brooke Boquist. Adding to her past success, which includes an Isobel Cup championship with the Buffalo
Beauts, Darkangelo, across 55 PHF contests, has tallied 48 points, recording 25 goals, while
adding 23 assists. Darkangelo was among 11 players to sign with the Six from the team’s inaugural 2020-21 roster. Joined by Elaine Chuli, Taylor Woods, Emma Woods, Brooke Boquist, Breanne Wilson-
Bennett, Amy Curlew, Natalie Marcuzzi, Lindsay Eastwood, Mikyla Grant-Mentis, Samantha Ridgewell, and Sarah Steele, the group reached the Isobel Cup Semifinals in Wesley Chapel, where the Six fell 5-1 at the hands of the Boston Pride.
A key cog to the Toronto Six formation, Darkangelo rose rapidly in the professional ranks after
four years of college between the Syracuse Orange and Quinnipiac Bobcats. In her Senior year,
she was named as an alternate following a career-best season in 2013-14. Splitting her tenure
between the two programs, Darkangelo, through 144 games, registered 102 points, tallying 56
goals while adding 46 assists.
A veteran in the professional women’s hockey sphere, the 28-year-old, with the likes of Chuli,
played in the CWHL, where she competed with the Kunlun Red Star and Toronto Furies.
The Royal Oaks, MI native adds past experience from the U.S. National Team, where she
secured a gold medal at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship, while also taking part in
two Four Nations Cup tournaments.
Setting her sights on another new chapter for the league, Darkangelo is looking forward to
competing again and elevating the product of women’s hockey with the Six.
“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the PHF and to be here getting to play hockey at the
highest level in North America in a professional league that is sustainable, and where salaries
are increasing and supporting us to be able to do this more full-time than ever before in North
America,” she explained. “I’m obviously excited to continue with the Six, and see what we can
do this season moving forward and build off what we had last season.”
